3 Basic Chemistry Experiments to Try

Whether at school or another organization, there are a few basic chemistry experiments all students and people should do. These experiments provide essential knowledge for the further study of chemistry, are fun, and are super easy to conduct.

This article will highlight three of our favorite experiments, beginning with the separation of sand and salt.

Separating sand and salt chemistry experiment

One of the most basic experiments out there is the separation of sand and salt, requiring very few ingredients and little equipment. This chemistry experiment teaches the basics of filtration, evaporation, and the dissolving process.

When the solution is heated, the salt dissolves leaving the remainder of the mixture to be filtered and leaving the sand in the paper – as we said, easy to do and with quick results.

Viscosity of liquids

The second experiment we have for you is the viscosity of liquids, providing students with insight into the basic chemistry concept.

You will provide identical tubes containing different liquids, such as water, cooking oil (avoid used oil as these are highly flammable), or washing up liquid. Students measure how long it takes for a bubble to pass through the liquid, requiring very little equipment and little preparation on your part.

The pH scale chemistry experiment

Finally, we have the popular pH scale chemistry experiment, used to showcase the pH level of different substances, e.g. deionized water, magnesium oxide, soda water, a dilute sulfuric acid solution, and others. Students analyze the samples and hold the PH scale test to the light to see how acidic a solution is.

This teaches students the basics of the pH scale and how acidic some substances are, a necessary building block for further chemistry and a whole load of fun.
