What is a Biotechnologist?

We’ve discussed the many different roles that involve chemistry in another blog. However, one of these roles which have proven to be quite popular is that of a biotechnologist. For those that don’t already know, a biotechnologist is someone who develops new products to improve and better human life.

While the role may sound complicated at a glance, and while it certainly is complex, it is, however, a little more straightforward than you might initally think. To help provide further insight, this article will discuss more on the role of a biotechnologist, helping you understand what it is exactly they do and perhaps whether or not you want to pursue this career yourself!

Biotechnologists work across many different industries

For starters, it’s worth mentioning that biotechnologists work across many different industries, including health and medical, pollution, agriculture, and food and drink sectors.

Whichever chosen specialization, this type of chemist focuses on improving products to better the environment and human health, e.g. genetically modifying crops to increase yields, finding new ways to reuse certain plastics, and finding better ways to reduce pollution and the impact it has on the environment.

Collecting and testing samples

Virtually all biotechnologists collect some form of sample, later testing and analyzing these. These samples may be anything from food and drink, biofuel, air pollution, or anything in between, done to find better solutions to the products and problems we currently face.

Designing and creating various research studies

Finally, a key role of a biotechnologist is within designing and creating various research studies. This research is based on practical findings and theoretical frameworks, written and applied to regular human life.

Often, universities and often institutions hire these specialist chemists to teach frameworks and provide insight into the real world of being a biotechnologist. These studies are then published and can then be applied by others to contribute to real-world change. As with all science, researchers have just as much a contribution as those performing the experiments and discovering new solutions – it’s a team game and everyone is involved.
