What Is Chemical Technology?

Whether you work in the field of chemistry or not, you may have heard the phrase “chemical technology” in passing. However, what does this mean? Chemical technology is is a branch of applied chemistry concerned with creating new chemical products.

As a part of this industry, there are also chemical technicians (trained professionals and chemists who operate complex equipment and perform various in-depth experiments). The role of a chemical technician can vary massively, from testing regular chemicals, to researching pollution and other chemicals that may negatively impact the environment.

This article will discuss more on chemical technology and the role of a chemical technician, beginning with a key distinction between two popular roles.

Laboratory vs. processing technicians

Within chemical technology, there are two main roles: laboratory technicians and processing technicians. However, what’s the difference between the two? Lab technicians generally set up, prepare, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment, assisting the main scientists in experiments when required. On the other hand, processing technicians monitor the chemicals at the manufacturing facilities to ensure proper output and accuracy. Essentially, processing technicians loosely assist the lab technicians while the lab technicians support the scientists.

Why is chemical technology important?

This occupation and line of work are important for several reasons. For example, this includes the monitoring of pollution, contributing real solutions to real-world problems (e.g. climate change), presenting new research, developing much-needed medical drugs, and more.

Without chemical technology and chemistry, the world would be a very different place. To put it simply, the use of chemical technology helps us better understand the world, creating new solutions and products to make life processes and everyday life easier, across various capacities.

How do you become a chemical technician?

To become a chemical technician, you will need at least an undergraduate degree in chemistry with a decent grade. Furthermore, you should also seek relevant work experience, perhaps as a laboratory assistant to better your chances at employment.

The industry is fairly competitive, mainly due to the universal and constant need for chemical technicians – chemical technology is an ever-expanding industry.
